When Denise was 6 and we lived on Dunaway in Euless, one of our cats had captured a small gray rat and was holding it hostage on the back porch. Upon seeing the rat in distress, Denise immediately ran over to save the rat. Of course, the rat bit the hell out of her as she tried to save it. This is not the actual rat, I’m just trying to illustrate.
When Denise lived in Austin, she found a small starving kitten that was near death in a parking lot. In the following days, half of the poor cat’s face fell off. The vet said the kitten may have been so hungry that it tried to go after a rattlesnake for food and been bitten by the snake. The cat had to have extensive (and expensive) plastic surgery and Denise faithfully took it back to the vet every day for weeks afterward for wound care as well as caring for it at home. Luckily, the cat’s fur covered most of the scars and the cat turned out looking pretty good (but was always a little off mentally). This was her beloved cat Maggie, pictured above with Maddie.
About a year ago, as Denise was waiting in the drive-thru at CVS, a bum came up to her and pulled a tiny, filthy kitten out of his pocket. He told her that he found the kitten and he was obviously wanting her to give him money for it. Denise could see that the kitten was covered in greasy motor oil and fleas so of course she gave the bum some cash and took the cat home to clean it up and nurture it back to health. Denise named this cat Ellie Mae and it became her favorite and most beautiful cat. This is a picture of Ellie Mae.
Denise was always there for me as well during my times of distress. She would listen to me and try to help (without taking the opportunity to point out that whatever situation I was in was probably my own fault). I knew I could always count on Denise.
